Our favourite 'list of 100 things' website DnD Speak gives us a list of 100 questions you can ask when making a new character. They're mostly flavour and probably won't define your character but definitely worth the 1$.

My good friends at Triden Games are making a book with 100 character races and subraces and have put out a preview of a vampire-like race called the Keyrop!

I have personally played with half-orc monks and I love it as a class/race combo. Wastes the crit bonus, but dropping to 1 instead of 0 makes monks somehow even harder to kill.
